DESCRIPTION This study-unit indicates the tools and methods which can be applied to the gathering of Malta’s Collective Memory on a local and national level. The methodology applied in the gathering of information by way of interviews with different categories of elderly persons are indicated and exemplified. The subject matter assumes different approaches according to different places, the basic distinction being between rural and urban areas of the Maltese Islands. Collective memory is an important source of information for the historian complementing his research based on written documents.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to discuss the different sectors of society according to the craftsmanship and intellectual abilities of the interviewed persons and to what extent they contribute to the rural or urban, social, cultural and linguistic development of the relevant towns and villages and the general history of Malta.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to write about and be able to discuss the different methodologies, characters, and values of diverse urban and rural areas of Malta and the different tools as to how persons are to be approached in the gathering of information.
